Four years ago we could never have imagined the impact that the Vertex Awards would have on private brands globally. This year’s record-setting class of entrants is evidence of not only Vertex’s impact on design but strategy. We have pushed retailers, agencies and manufacturers to explore the boundaries of private brand, to push beyond the expected and traditional and create brands and package design that truly differentiates.

To celebrate the winners and the release of the book we will host the first ever Vertex Awards Celebration. The event will be heldjust prior to the PLMA International trade show, May 15th, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Hilton Amsterdam, Netherlands. All retailers, agencies, manufacturers and service providers are welcome to join us for this Free event.

This year’s competition included more than 300 entries from 25 countries and 49 retailers from each of the inhabited continents of the world: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.

“Our book, Vertex Awards IV International Retail Brand Design Competition, hits shelves today and is a celebration of the winners of the competition,” said Christopher Durham, Vice President of Retail Brands at Theory House and founder of this site and co-founder of the competition, continued, “We believe by showcasing the best of the best, we can raise the bar for store brand packaging and usher in the modern age of retail owned brands.”

“If you look on retail shelves today, they’re often filled with uninspired private label packaging, all looking pretty much the same,” said Phillip Russo, co-founder, and Publisher, Global Retail Brands magazine. “But if you really start looking, you can find brands that are taking a chance on their packaging design. Some are whimsical, some are retro, but they’re all outstanding. We wanted to recognize the retailers and designers who are doing it right and show the industry that fantastic package design can make a difference.”

The 180 page, 8”x 8” hardcover book, designed by the retail branding agency Theory House, is an homage to the more than 80 design winners from around the world.

We would like to congratulate Spain’s retailers and agencies who were awarded both the Best of Show and Publisher’s choice and made strong showings across numerous categories. The overall “Best in Show” winner Consum and their agency, Maslow, and their entry ™Kyrey for Men∫ prove that great Retail Brands can have a unique personality and compete and differentiate in the highly competitive category of Health & Beauty. We also call your attention to our Publisher’s Choice, the stunning design from El Corte Inglés in Spain. The design from Supperstudio embraces a normal, often boring category, bagged potatoes, and creates a compelling pack that tells a story and engages customers with bright colors and playful design.
