PLMA Salute to Excellence Wine Awards Tasting and Evaluating nearly 300 Store Brand Wines
My grandfather would have laughed if I told him I spent 2 days tasting more than one hundred Store Brand wines. Although he drank wine every day for his entire 89 years, he never spent a dime buying it. He simply made his own. And for more than 20 years, I helped out, every October in a small garage in Jersey City, New Jersey.
So what I lack in professional experience, I more than make up for in emotional attachment. Wine continues to play an extremely important role in my life, so my gratitude to PLMA for including me in the 2nd Salute to Excellence Wine Tasting is very real.
20 wine professionals, journalists and enthusiats gathered at the Hilton Amsterdam April 4-6 to taste nearly 300 private label wines from 40 retailers in 16 countries around the world. Red, White, Rosé and Sparkling were grouped into 22 categories based on either grape variety of terrior.
Wines were blind tasted for quality, taking into consideration appearance, color smell and taste and awarded scores of up to 20 points. After that, each group was judged based on packaging and labeling.
The winners of PLMA’s 2017 International Salute to Excellence Wine Awards will be announced at the Awards presentation which leads off the pre-show seminar program on Monday 15 May at the RAI Exhibition Center, during World of Private Label in Amsterdam.
